If you run marketing at a B2B company, you have probably heard two things in the same week. Organic search is steady, and buyers are asking ChatGPT for a shortlist. Both can be true, and they are measured in different ways.
Organic search is the set of unpaid results on search engines such as Google and Bing. AI search is the written answer an assistant gives, which names a handful of companies and often shows few links. They share foundations, because AI answers often draw on pages that search engines have already indexed. They differ in what counts as a win: a ranking and a click in one, a name and a recommendation in the other.
This page is for marketing leads and founders at established B2B companies who want to know what changes and what does not. It covers how AI answers use organic search, what the click data shows, where the two are measured, what buyers actually type into search, and a 30-day plan you can start with the tools you already have.
What Organic Search and AI Search Each Mean
- Organic search means the unpaid results a search engine shows for a query. You earn them with pages that are crawlable, relevant and trusted, and you measure them in impressions, clicks and average position. Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools report them directly.
- AI search means any product that writes an answer instead of returning only a list of links. That includes ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and two features inside Google Search: AI Overviews and AI Mode. The result is a paragraph that names some companies and leaves out others. Success here is being named, recommended, cited and described correctly.
The Google features blur the line. Google's documentation on AI features says that sites shown in them "are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console" and reported in the Performance report. So for Google, AI search is partly a layer on top of organic search. For the other assistants, it is a separate channel with its own sources.
How AI Answers Draw on Organic Search, and Where They Do Not
AI answers lean on organic search but do not simply copy the top 10. Google says a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The same page says these features may use a technique called query fan-out, which it describes as "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources."
That fan-out explains a finding from Ahrefs. In March 2026 it analysed 863,000 keyword results and about 4 million URLs cited in AI Overviews, using data from its own Brand Radar tool. Only 37.9% of the cited URLs also appeared in the first 10 results for the original query. In an earlier Ahrefs study, from July 2025, the figure was about 76%.
| In the first 10 results | 37.9% |
|---|---|
| Positions 11 to 100 | 31.2% |
| Beyond position 100 | 31% |

Ahrefs' own reading is that AI Overviews rely "less on the direct search results and more on the sources showing up in fan out query SERPs." My reading of that, and it is an inference, is that ranking for the exact phrase a buyer types no longer decides whether you are cited. Your pages also need to rank for the narrower questions the system asks behind the scenes.
OpenAI describes something similar for ChatGPT. Its help page on ChatGPT search says responses that use web search may include citations, and that ChatGPT may search the web automatically when a question would benefit from current information. In both cases, the web is a source, but the assistant chooses what to retrieve.
What Changes for Clicks
When an AI summary appears, people click less. Pew Research Center analysed the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025. About 18% of their Google searches produced an AI summary. Users who saw one clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits. Those who did not see one clicked on 15%.
| Search page with an AI summary | 8% |
|---|---|
| Search page with only traditional results | 15% |
Source: Pew Research Center, browsing data of 900 US adults, March 2025, published July 2025. US data from March 2025. UK and UAE behaviour may differ. Chart by ThriveFinity.
Pew also found that links inside the AI summary itself were clicked on just 1% of visits. So a ranking can still matter, but it brings fewer visits than it once did. When the reader stops at the answer, being named inside it carries the weight a page-one position used to.
That is the real change for B2B teams. Your organic traffic report can stay flat while your shortlist presence moves, because the decision is made earlier, in the answer. It is also why a traffic chart on its own can mislead you in either direction.
What Stays the Same
Most of the groundwork is unchanged, and Google says so in its own documentation.
The best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode). There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.
Danny Sullivan of Google put it more bluntly at WordCamp US in August 2025.
Good SEO is good GEO, or AEO, AIO, LLM SEO, or LMNOPO.
Take it as Google's view of its own systems. It does not tell you how ChatGPT or Perplexity choose sources. If you want the full session, WordPress published the talk.
In practice, these things serve both channels. Pages that are crawlable and indexed. Clear titles and headings. Direct answers near the top of the page. Accurate company facts that match across your site and the web. Claims that cite a source. If a page fails on these, neither organic search nor AI search will help it.
Organic Search and AI Search Side by Side
The table below sets out the differences that matter for planning. The last row is where most teams are under-prepared.
| Question | Organic search | AI search |
|---|---|---|
| What the buyer sees | A ranked list of links | A written answer naming a few companies |
| What counts as a win | Position, impressions, clicks | Named, recommended, cited, described correctly |
| Where you measure it | Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, analytics | Search Console generative AI reports, Bing AI Performance, a fixed set of buyer questions |
| How stable it is | Moves gradually | Varies from run to run |
| What you can influence | Technical access, content, links | All of that, plus answer-first pages and mentions on sources the assistants trust |
| What most teams lack | Usually well covered | A repeatable way to see whether you are named |
How to Measure Both
Start with the first-party data, then add a fixed question set. Both Google and Microsoft now give some AI reporting, and neither tells you who the assistant recommended instead of you.
Google's Search Console added generative AI performance reports in June 2026, and they reached all websites by 31 August 2026. They show how often URLs from your site appeared in generative AI features in Search and Discover. Microsoft launched AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools in February 2026, covering Copilot and AI summaries in Bing, with citation counts and the grounding queries the AI used.
For the assistants that report nothing, you need your own panel. Write 20 to 50 buyer questions, ask each one several times in each tool, and record every answer. Repetition matters because answers vary. A study by SparkToro covering 2,961 runs found that fewer than 1 in 100 repeats of the same question returned the same list of brands.
So report a range, not a single score. Our worked example on why an AI visibility score needs a range shows how, and the guide to measuring AI share of voice covers the metrics. If you want a first reading without building anything, running an AI visibility check by hand takes an afternoon.
What Buyers Actually Type
Buyers searching for help use several names for the same job, and organic search is not the biggest. On 20 October 2026 I pulled keyword volumes for the UK and US from two tools, Semrush and Ahrefs. The table shows estimated monthly searches.
| Search term | UK Semrush | UK Ahrefs | US Semrush | US Ahrefs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ai seo agency | 1,900 | 2,000 | 4,400 | 3,800 |
| geo agency | 880 | 600 | 720 | 1,700 |
| llm seo | 590 | 500 | 1,900 | 1,600 |
| organic search agency | 590 | 400 | 590 | 400 |
| organic search marketing agency | 320 | 150 | 260 | 200 |
| ai search optimisation agency | 210 | 50 | 110 | 300 |
| ai seo agency | 2,000 |
|---|---|
| geo agency | 600 |
| llm seo | 500 |
| organic search agency | 400 |
| organic search marketing agency | 150 |
| ai search optimisation agency | 50 |
Source: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, UK database, pulled by ThriveFinity, 20 October 2026. A third-party estimate. Semrush shows different figures for the same terms, as the table above does. Chart by ThriveFinity.
Two things stand out. First, the tools disagree, sometimes by more than double. For geo agency in the US, Semrush shows 720 and Ahrefs 1,700. Read the table for the order of magnitude, not the exact figure. Second, ai seo agency is two to six times larger than geo agency in most columns, and organic search agency is smaller than both.
The trend matters as much as the size. In Ahrefs' US data, monthly searches for ai seo agency grew from about 770 in October 2024 to over 4,000 by mid-2026. Searches for organic search agency stayed between roughly 200 and 700 across the same 24 months. The first is a new, growing way to describe the work. The second is a stable, older one.
For a B2B company choosing words, this suggests a simple rule. Describe what you do in the terms buyers use, and treat the names as synonyms. AI SEO, GEO and LLM SEO point at the same work. Use organic search when you mean the channel, and be clear when you mean the AI layer on top of it.
A 30-Day Plan for a B2B Team
You can start this month with your current tools and no new budget. The plan has four steps, and the order matters because each one feeds the next.
- Check the basics in week one. Confirm your key pages are indexed, eligible for a snippet and not blocked from the crawlers of the assistants you care about. Fix any page that fails before you measure anything.
- Write the buyer questions in week two. List 20 to 50 questions real buyers ask, across the problem, comparison, vendor choice and price. Keep the list fixed, so next month's results can be compared with this month's.
- Run and record in week three. Ask each question several times in each tool. Record every answer, which companies were named and which sources were cited. Do not judge from a single run.
- Fix five pages and re-run in week four. Rewrite the five most important pages answer-first, correct wrong company facts, and add sources for claims. Re-run the same questions a month later and compare ranges.
Expect organic search and AI search to move at different speeds. Search Console updates within days. AI answers change when the assistants recrawl and refresh their sources, and no one outside those companies controls the timing. That is why a month is the shortest useful gap between runs.
One caution on tools. Many AI visibility tools report a single percentage. Ask what prompts it ran, how many times, in which tools and with what settings. If it cannot tell you, the number tells you very little. Our GEO agency buyer's guide has ten questions to ask any provider.
Where ThriveFinity Fits
ThriveFinity measures and improves how AI assistants describe B2B companies. The free AI Visibility Signal runs 12 buyer questions across GPT (OpenAI), Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and scores how often you are named. It is AI-generated and unsigned by design, so treat it as a first reading.
The paid work is the AI Search Readiness Retrofit, with a scoped estimate first, then a re-test at day 30. It includes the on-page SEO that helps both channels and adds answer-first structure, consistent company facts and sourced claims. You can read the scope on the AI search optimisation page.
There are limits.
- We don't buy links or paid placements.
- We don't promise a citation, a ranking or revenue.
- If what you need is a long-running SEO programme with technical work, links and content at volume, a traditional SEO agency is the right buy, and you can run the plan above alongside it.
